Thesis Title: The Analysis of Character Representation in Darius Mehrjuie’s Trilogy (Sara,Pari and Leila) based on Judith Butler’s Theories.
Supervisor: Dr. Shahabeddin Adel

Abstract:
Beside introducing new commodities and services, commercial advertisements represent and propagate cultural values and relationships. This research has been an attempt to study the gender representation in advertisements broadcasted on IRIB during 40s and 50s and 90s (solar year). In order to do so, Erving Goffman’s theories have been applied. Goffman introduces six topics which are most common in epresenting women within the commercials which are relative size, feminine touch, family, function ranking, ritualization of subordination, and licensed withdrawal. The findings of the present thesis reveal that the commercials off 40s and 50s, more than other factors, have used ritualization of
subordination and licensed withdrawal and the family pattern has been rarely detected in this group which mostly highlights sexual attractions of women. However, in advertisements of 90s the family pattern has been detected to be the most represented one.

Abstract:
The history of the use of terms such as critique, theory, and postcolonial studies dates back to the late 1950s, although the beginning of the collapse of colonial empires dates back to before this time, after World War II. Post-colonialism was initially presented as a research branch in cultural studies, linked to categories such as nationalism, Multiculturalism, ethnicity, race, and cultural identity, and sought to investigate the relationship of colonized withe colonial culture. The post-prefix is that post-colonialism describes post-independence cultures, but the post-colonial unit can also be a “ethnic minority” of an immigrant or a native citizen. The central themes of works such as the Franz Fannon’s The Wretched of the Earth, Edward Said’s Orientalism, Gayatri Spivak’s views, and others are always the critique of Western folk art as “self-European.” In this “Eurocentrism” culture, marginalized people become “the other”…

Supervisor: Dr. Shahabeddin Adel
Student: Mehrnoush Fetrat
Years: October 2016

Abstract:
The purpose of this project is to become familiar with Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s Melodrama as well as enumerating the salient future of it. The opinion of theorists such as Peter Brooks, Eric Bentley and Thomas Elsaesser is used to analyze the formal characteristic of melodrama in Fassbinder’s works. Since there is no comprehensive theory called melodrama, in addition to the idea of these theorists, the opinion of others such as James L. Smith, Susan Hayward, Warren Buckland and Christine Goldhill has also been noted. Despite the fact that most of Fassbinder’s works are melodrama, but the analysis of his melodramatic approach has the condition that cannot rely on the opinion of genre theorist domain. Therefore in this study, the comments by Michel Foucault and Jacques Lacan are used to analyze the hysterical character and complex power relation between Fassbinder’s characters. In theoretical frame work of this study three main type of melodrama are presented and then the three key points which are mainly highlighted in the analysis of melodrama are also considered. These three issues are examined in detail considering the nonradical theorist, Eric Bentley, and radical one, Thomas Elsaesser. All of these cases have been studied in the four Fassbinder’s works: The Marriage of Maria Braun. Ali: Fear Eats the Soul, Fear of Fear, and The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant. Key questions of this study are as follow: what is the characteristic of Fassbinder’s work? What is the status of woman in his work? What is the concept of victim in Fasbinder’s Cinema? How is the reflection of socio political environment after the world war two in his works?
